The Journey is the reward…

I am currently involved in something so different from what I usually do, it astonishes even me.

It may take several months before I can tell people about it, but for now let me tell you that it brings me unbelievable happiness – it is something I have dreamt of doing for decades, but never thought I would ever be allowed to actually do.

Even if nothing ever comes out of this – the journey itself is the reward. And so are my fellow travellers.

And no – it has nothing to do with IT or rock music.

MS v/s OSS – a questionable article

This article reports on some economic modelling that two professors at Harvard did to check out the future of the fashionable “Microsoft v/s Open Source war”.

I think this entire research, though marginally supportive of FOSS, is bogus – full of errors and wrong assumptions, and even the results are more of speculation than anything else.

Here’s why:

Just one gasp….

Did you know that you can tell a smoker just by looking at a person, without even smelling the smoke on him or her? It’s easy – look for the telltale signs: the pasty pallor, the unhealthy look of the skin on the face, the constant shifting of the eyes, the constant look of tension and worry.

I have never seen a relaxed smoker.

The myth of “smoking relaxes you” is just that – a myth. What it really does is chemically control you. And every cigarette you smoke reduces the “calming” effect on you a notch, while increasing the dependency several notches.

And the effect it has on you psychologically is probably the worst of them all – when you find yourself lighting up at the dinner table, knowing how disgusted everyone will be, or when you spray yourself with perfume to get rid of the smell, or when you see your child looking at you accusingly with that “do you know what you are doing to *me*?” look, that strangled look on the face of your loved one as you kiss or just hold each other…

All this takes its toll on your mind, as you begin to accept all it, because you are a slave to that 10 cm long roll of paper, with burning embers on one side, and a complete fool on the other.

A fool, because you seriously believe that you can stop whenever you want to.

It’s been four years today since I stopped smoking.

And I still feel the urge every now and then, though I have valiently held out and not touched a coffin nail since 10pm on that fateful day in June of 2001.

How bad can it be?

Let me tell you:

Imagine you are in a pool of water, and someone pushes you under. You struggle to get back to the air, you feel your lungs bursting, your mind screaming.

Just one gasp of air – that’s all you want.

And that’s what I feel like when the urge to smoke hits me, even today. And I live in a world where people indiscriminately light up all around me. Every time, it is like I am being pushed underwater again, and the struggle starts again. I may seem unaffected on the outside. I may even tell you that your smoking doesn’t bother me, but I am lying – I am dying inside.

Every smoker knows that he or she is possibly smoking that bullet that has his or her name on it. This could be the one – the one that triggers off the first cancerous cell mutation in your lungs.

But did you know that as a “reformed” smoker, I will continue to be at risk to the health hazards of smoking even years after I stopped, possibly for the rest of my life?

It needn’t be my lighting up a cigarette – it could be the secondary smoke I inhale from your cigarette as you stand near me. That final straw, the intake of a few milligrams of carcinogens that will send my body irreversibly over the edge to its doom.

Let this be a lesson to all those who think that they can start and stop smoking when they feel like it. You may be able to stop some day (it took me decades), but you will always be a smoker – even if you don’t smoke again for the rest of your life.

The damage to your body is only half the story.

The damage to your mind is the real bad news.

Do yourself a favour – stop. And the best way to stop smoking is to not even start.

But if you *have* to smoke and kill yourself, please don’t take me with you.

Wooooooohooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!

Woke up this morning to find a small little parcel waiting for me. That was strange, because I hadn’t ordered anything. But I looooove surprises.

And what a surprise it was!

I am now the proud owner of the much wanted, never been able to get Led Zeppelin Double DVD set. Check out the 500+ customer reviews on the linked Amazon page to understand why I am so excited about this.

Heaven, here I come!

Many many many thanks, Sanjay! Only a friend who knows me really well would have thought of a gesture like this!

The Force is strong with this one…

I sit here, looking at a neat pile of pieces of green paper.

There are 15 of them. On their own, they are not very impressive.

I lean over slightly to read the text written on them – they say “Vaibhav”, and various other technical terms, such as DOLBY Digital Surrounded, DTS Sound, Airconditioned (YESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!), and today’s date and the words “Second Show” (9:30pm).

When I touch one of them, the sense of rushing midochlorians hits you.

The Force is strong with this one.

Strong enough to break an 17 year old self-imposed exile from movie theatres.

It was exactly 17 years ago (in May 1988) that I last saw a movie in a theatre.

But tonight, at 9:30pm, the irresistable pull of The Force will drag me 200 metres across the street to the Vaibhav Theatre, where 14 close friends and family and I will take in the final part of the Star Wars saga.

It has been a long wait – I hope it was worth it.

Happy Birthday, Wife!

Today is the wife’s birthday, and she is *again* out of town! This is becoming a habit. :(

IAC, let me put on record that the dogs and the cat and I miss her.

Actually, I think I miss her little more.

Happy Birthday, Shubha – life wouldn’t be the same without you.

Huawei router to ADSL modem

Way too many people have been writing in asking this question, so I am going to answer this one immediately:

“How did you disable the router functionality in the Huawei MT800/880 – making it a raw pppoe DSL modem?”

Here’s what you need to do:

Back from Mysore

Yesterday, I was in Mysore, giving a talk at the NIE.

The journey to Mysore was great – for the first time, I travelled by the Shatabdi First Class AC, and it was an thoroughly enjoyable experience – lots of room, carpeting, wide seats, efficient airconditioning, great food and good service. I wasn’t even aware of the fact that one can book this class of seat from Bangalore to Mysore – and I certainly will never travel by anything else again! :)

Arrived on the dot of 1pm, and was collected by Viksit, headed for the NIE, where Kalyan was just winding up his talk on secure design of applications. He clearly had a good time with his talk, given the number of questions he got asked.

He also had the advantage of a pre-lunch crowd. :)

I did my talk on the Open Source Desktop [pdf], which seemed to have entertained and educated, but it was hard to tell with many of the post-lunch, high-temperature-afflicted faces. :) Every time I took a sip from my chilled coke (thanks, Viksit!), I could see the look of longing on their faces.

After I finished my main talk, I hit them with my real agenda – Students and Innovation [pdf], and that clearly hurt. My mailbox overfloweth with messages from students asking how they can fix their lives! :)

At NIE, Mysore, on Sunday

I will be speaking at the National Institute of Engineering, at the Ankura 2005 techfest, on Sunday, the 8th of May. I will be speaking about the Open Source Desktop, and will address some of the myths and misconceptions about this subject.

Of course, I will use the opportunity to push my favourite cause – more innovation and involvement by students (not just in Free & Open Source) – as well.

Unfortunately, I am going to be there for only a really short period – arriving at 1pm, and leaving again at 6pm. :(

Pity – I love Mysore, and try to go there often. The city reminds me of the Bangalore of the mid 1980′s, before the tech-boom hit the place.
